Malta International Air Show 2011

 Malta International Air Show 2011

Where and When? Luqa, 24-25th September 2011

Official site:

In past years the Malta International Air Show has always amazed its spectators and I doubt this year it will not disappoint. In 1993 the Malta Aviation Society have put on this outdoor the first show was held over Marsamxetto Harbour with the bastion as a background drop. These days it is held at the International Airport in Luqa on the 24th September and the 25th September.

This year there are 19 aircrafts from 8 different Royal Air forces including Malta’s. The main attraction will be Italy’s fleet of Frecce Tricolori MB-339 PAN these are the trainer jets for all fast jet pilots in the Italian Air Force. The high-level aerobatic tradition that will be shown by the Frecce Tricolori comes from a glorious past made possible by men and machines.

This year is the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy and the Frecce Tricolori are proud ambassadors of the Italian Air Force .They will be the world’s largest aerobatic team to fly on both days and on Sunday they will bring the show to an end.

Another attraction will be the Dakota from the British RAF; this magnificent piece of machinery fought in WWII and was known as the GOONEY BIRD by the troops. The Dakota joined the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight in 1993 and since then she went through some restoration in 2004.I will guarantee that she will steal the show. You will also be able to see crafts from Ireland Switzerland France USA and The Netherlands Royal Air Forces.

Where can I buy tickets?

Tickets to the 2011 Malta International Air Show are available from the 1st of September at all McDonalds Restaurants in Malta and Gozo and from the International Airport. The price for an adult is 12 Euros, children under 14 are free; the tickets are only valid for one day.

If you are an enthusiast you will be able to purchase a special 4 day ticket for 75 Euros, this will include entry on Friday which is arrivals day near the active runway threshold, from approximately 10:30 – 16:00 (Subject to airport security permits). Free Entry on the two public days (Sat & Sun) in Air show public areas. Entry to Park 2 at pre-determined time windows, entry on Monday which is departures day near Park 2 (Static Park) from 08:00 – 13:00 plus a free Air show Souvenir Programme. For these tickets you will need to get in contact with the organizers on this email address, booking in advance is recommended. On this day you will also be able to buy some merchandise ranging from 3 Euros to 7 Euros.

I would recommend this day out as one for all the family as the aircrafts are part of our history and they deserved to be enjoyed and cheered for they bravery plus the pilots would be pleased if they can show off their skills to a big crowd.
