Michael Mifsud Returns to Valletta

It was announced on July 5th that Maltese national soccer captain Michael Mifsud has signed a four-year contract with Valletta. However, it’s believed that the 30-year-old has an opt-out clause that he can use if a foreign club comes calling for him.

Mifsud’s last club was Qormi, and he also played for the City during the last three months of the 2009/10 campaign, which helped them capture the FA trophy and the National League 100th anniversary cup.
Mifsud, who was born in Sliema, has also played for the Sliema Wanderers, Lillestrom, Kaiserslautern, Barnsley, Coventry City, and Valletta. He was also honoured as the Maltese Sports Person of the Year back in 2001 and again in 2003.

Mifsud debuted with Sliema in the 1997–98 season and was given a trial by Manchester United in 1999. He left Sliema after the 2000/01 season after scoring 60 goals in 80 games and moved to Germany to play with Kaiserslautern of the Bundesliga.

However, he only scored two goals in 21 games and wasn’t getting regular playing time. Kaiserslautern released him in 2004 and he returned to Sliema for the rest of the season and scored eight goals in 12 games.

The 5-foot-5 striker was on the move again during the summer in 2005 when he joined Lillestrom of the Norwegian Premier League. He finished as their top scorer with 11 goals in 19 games in 2006. At the end of that season he left Norway for England and joined Coventry City of the Championship League. He scored 17 times in 86 games for Coventry, including the team’s goal of the season in his first year.

He also helped Coventry knock Manchester United out of the League Cup in 2007–08 when he scored twice at Old Trafford to give the underdogs a 2-0 win in the third round. He was the runner up for Coventry’s player of the year award in 2008. However, Coventry sold him to Bristol City that summer, but Bristol failed to sign him. He then returned to Coventry and played as a midfielder. Coventry released him in the summer of 2009 and he signed with Barnsley on loan, scoring two goals in 15 games.

His next stop was back in Malta with Valletta and he played with them until the end of the 2009/10 season, scoring seven goals in seven league games and six more in five cup matches. Mifsud moved to Qormi in 2011 and scored seven goals in five games with them. He debuted with the Maltese national team in 2000 and has 26 goals in 83 games for his country.
